Mas des Baux, Les Baux-en-Provence

Sleeps 12

€9,000 per week

The family-owned vineyards (the vineyard label shows the original Mas as painted by Van Gogh for the current owner’s Great Grand Father) is the setting for this large comfortable house, built on a slight incline just above the vineyards. The house, terraces and large lawned garden are all positioned to enjoy a view which can only be Provençal.  Here are the rugged mountains of Les Alpilles and, on a rocky outcrop crowned with a ruined castle overlooking the plains to the south, is one of the most picturesque villages of France –  Les Baux-de-Provence.  At night the floodlit village makes a stunning backdrop to dinner on the terrace or a late night dip in the pool.

St Rémy-de-Provence is a short five kilometre drive down country lanes.  It is an elegant market town with plenty of restaurants, cafés in shaded boulevards and fountain-filled squares.  You will find many galleries and studios along with stylish as well as typical Provençal shops making this a very pleasant place to while away a few hours.  Or, if you fancy lunch on a beach, the Camargue and sea is a forty minute drive.

The accommodation of Mas des Baux on the ground floor is spread across terracotta floors and beamed rooms.  There are four bedrooms, two sitting rooms, a TV room and a large, farmhouse-style kitchen.   Upstairs there are a further two bedrooms.  Plenty of space for everyone.

The house is comfortably furnished as it the home of the owner for most of the year.

A large deep terrace runs along the front of the house with plenty of outdoor sofas and dining facilities and this is surrounded by flowerbeds predominantly planted with highly scented, white roses.  Across the lawn is the large pool with a welcome shady pergola over banquette seating.

What Sarah thinks:

“When my husband and I visited the Estate we left the visit with the car boot filled with delicious wine!  And this is just one of the bonuses of staying in this lovely, light-filled Mas.  There is such a feeling of peace here.  The air is perfumed with the scent of the many roses and the views are wonderful.  We simply didn’t want to leave.”
