Description

This beautiful old country house is located in the middle of a nature reserve near the village of La Mole in the heart of Provence and the Massif des Maures, the hills of the Moors.   Only twenty minutes’ drive from St Tropez, La Bastide was built in the 19th century. Set in the midst of some fifty acres of woods and vineyards on the edge of a protected forest, the main house is built on a gentle grassy slope with a view of the spectacular hills of Provence. The lower terrace, which runs along the front of the house, is in the shade of a hundred year old plane tree and its younger offspring and provides the comfort of outside living with immeasurable charm.

The accommodation is well presented and comfortably furnished with an elegantly decorated main Sitting Room with a large fireplace for cool autumn evenings. In the heat of the summer, the old natural flagstone floor of the ground floor rooms ensures constant and welcome cool in the house. There is a separate study, also with fireplace, and a desk and separate sitting room so the children can get stuck into their favourite films without disturbing the others! The dining room is decorated in Tuscan style and seats twelve with doors opening to the lower terrace.   The bedroom accommodation is again spacious with a huge master bedroom with sitting area, desk and sofa and door leading onto the upper terrace behind the house. Many of the bedrooms feature fabric-covered walls and all six are air conditioned.

La Cabanon: This is a small stucco building some 50 feet from the main house, which has been renovated very simply to house nannies or older children. It consists of one room with twin beds, a small kitchen and shower attached. This is the dream for teenagers!

Outside is a large swimming pool surrounded by pristine terracing and lots of sun loungers.   The pool is hidden away in an island of greenery, allowing children to enjoy themselves without disturbing the peace of those relaxing in the house or lower terrace. The gardens are wonderful with mown lawns and plenty of areas to explore and there are tables for outside dining under the welcome shade of the trees.

The nearby village of la Mole has a small but well-stocked supermarket and an award-winning bakery which also sells pies and pizzas. L’Auberge de la Mole is a well-known restaurant, often frequented by celebrities, which offers remarkable cuisine from the Périgord in a rustic setting. There are two other good little restaurants in the village as well.

Major supermarkets are 9 km distant in Cogolin, which holds market days twice weekly and there is tennis and riding available nearby.

Walks:  a privately maintained trail leads past the property to the well-known Chartreuse or Carthusian monastery of La Verne, high in the Massif des Maures. It is also possible to climb to the nearby ruins of Sainte Madeleine for an extraordinary view over the Gulf of St Tropez and the hills of Provence. The massif offers numerous other hiking possibilities.

The small airport of St Tropez is not far distant and is practical for arrival by private plane. Located on the other side of the hills of La Mole and with little traffic, its existence in no way disturbs the peace and quiet of the surroundings.

“I have known this house for many years. It is a traditional French country house, with simple bathrooms which all work fine.   Not for you if you are looking for the gold tap glitz of nearby St Tropez but this is country living at its best. Quietly elegant and in a beautiful, peaceful location.”

 Magnifique bastide avec a proximité commerces nécessaires. Un havre de paix aprés l’agitation tropézienne de la journée. Superbe piscine au calme. Pour 4 personnes nous n’avions que l’embarras du choix de chambres luxueusement décorées. Trés bonne literie, cuisine complète et complète, y compris machine a glaçons!! Tout était parfait, nous y reviendrons.
